About the Author

Hey all, and welcome to Grapple Tactics! My name’s Nick Gallo.
I’m a purple belt in BJJ teaching and training out of Los Angeles.

How I Got My Purple Belt

We tend to be pretty particular about who we learn from in the jiu-jitsu community, so here’s an overview of my experience (aka, why you should care what I have to say).

I was introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) in 2016 through a martial arts class I took in college at the University of San Diego. I grew up training American and Thai kickboxing, so I leapt at the opportunity to practice the martial arts again.

The subsequent rag-dolling I received made me realize there was a gaping hole in my education, so I dove into BJJ face first. In fact, my fellow students and I had such enthusiasm that our humble class quickly grew into a fully-fledged sports club.

Over the next couple years, we brought in many knowledgeable grapplers from the local community, which is no slouch in San Diego. Upon graduation, I continued my training at Victory MMA, founded by the legendary Dean Lister and Jocko Willink.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic happened a few short years later, shutting down all non-garage gyms in California. For unrelated reasons, I moved to Austin, Texas, during all the chaos, and was living there when everything reopened.

After bouncing around between a few different gyms (R.I.P. Dark Clan Fight Lab), I settled at 10th Planet Austin, led by the great Gabe Tuttle and Curtis Hembroff. Of course, Gordon Ryan and Craig Jones moved to town soon after, and I got to enjoy cross training in the new jiu-jitsu mecca.

I’ve since returned to southern California and now live in Los Angeles, where I train and teach no-gi classes out of Independent Jiu Jitsu, owned and operated by my good friends, professors Ricardo Wilke and Ben Willis.

The Origin of Grapple Tactics

Since 2020, I’ve run a full-time business as a financial content marketer. That’s primarily involved creating lengthy articles answering various questions about money and how it makes the world go ’round. As a result, I’ve spent thousands of hours creating digital resources that break complicated topics down in a digestible and engaging way.

One day, inspiration struck. I decided to combine my writing expertise with my knowledge of and passion for the art of grappling. Grapple Tactics is the result! My ultimate goal is to wade through the sea of BJJ techniques and content online today and help people find the optimal path to mastery in the sport.
